3.1. Introduction
The following protocols are supported
“Standard TCP/IP Port” = Raw Socket (Port 9100,
Reverse Telnet) using the Intermate Port 9100 Print
Port.
LPR (for standard ASCII data, e.g. PCL and PostScript)
using the Intermate LPR Print Port.
LPR using the native LPR in Windows NT 4.0 (
“Native
LPR” [page 38]

.
In order to print properly from an LPR queue, a TCP/IP net-
work-connected printer must have a card that supports LPD.
Note that the LPR port is best suited to servers that need to
communicate with host computers such as UNIX or VAX
machines by way of RFC 1179. For computers that need to
submit print jobs to host computers, the standard TCP/IP port
should be used in most cases.
What is a
“printer”
In Windows, the definition of a “printer” consists of three ele-
ments:
a a physical printer from a specific printer
manufacturer and of a specific type or model,
with a specific IP address
b a specific driver to be used (this driver may or
may not be from the same manufacturer)
c the port name to be used (port names are often
in themselves composed of two parts, for
example an IP address and a port).
Once defined, printers appear on the “Settings > Printer” func-
tion and they are presented on the list of printers you can
choose from whenever you use a Windows application on your
