GLOSSARY
byte Unit of seven or eight consecutive bits (the smallest unit of
information) used to represent a character or control function. It
is a fixed number of bits (in data processing, usually 8) operated
upon as a unit. A byte may represent a character, a machine
instruction or some other logical unit of information.
bypass The manual feed in slot. This device can also accept several
automated input accessories.
carriage return <CR> A control character that (unless set to be interpreted as a line
end) causes the printer to begin printing at the left margin of the
current line.
clear to send One of the hardware signals in the RS-232C interface.
coaxial cable PVC or teflon shielded 50-ohm cable, used for Ethernet. It is
designed to accommodate transmission rate of 10 megabits per
second. It comes in three lengths: 77, 230, and 384 feet.
curl The distortion of paper built in when paper is manufactured and
placed on large rollers before being cut into sheets. Effect is
intensified when paper is exposed to heat, pressure, moisture,
and drying.
Data set ready One of the hardware signals in the RS-232C interface.
Data terminal ready One of the hardware signals in the RS-232C interface.
default A printer setting that is used in place of a software application
selection.
default font The font that the printer automatically uses whenever the printer
is reset unless another font is specified by the user.
deletion area An area on a page on which data may not print.
downloaded font These are fonts loaded from the host system into the dynamic
memory of the printer. Downloaded fonts must be reloaded
each time the system is powered up.
