kilobyte (KB) Unit of 1,024 bytes.
landscape page orientation Landscape orientation refers to printing across the length of the
page (as opposed to portrait orientation which prints across the
width of the paper). The image on a landscape orientation,
therefore, runs parallel to the long edge of the paper. The term
“landscape” is derived from pictures of landscape, which are
usually horizontal in format.
leading Pronounced “ledding.“ 1. Vertical distance between lines (also
called line space), measured from a baseline of one line to the
baseline of the next. It also refers to extra spacing between lines
of type. In typography, spacing between lines and paragraphs.
light emitting diode (LED) Solid substance that glows when a current is passed through it.
Often used for indicator lights on disk drives or modems, as well
as displays on other electronic equipment.
line feed <LF> A control character (ASCII 10, 0AH) that causes the printer to
begin printing in the current character position of the next line.
Mbyte See megabyte.
megabyte (MB) Unit of 1,048,576 bytes.
mimic Lighted window on the machine to provide information to the
operator.
modem See modulator/demodulator.
modulator/demodulator Device that converts digital information into an analog signal
suitable for sending over analog phone lines. Also converts an
analog signal from phone lines into digital information.
Multi-sheet bypass feeder An accessory device which supplies sheets of input material by
way of the BYPASS.
Multi-media feeder An accessory device which supplies various types of input
material by way of the BYPASS.
