PRELIMINARY
Ethernet (LAN) Port
The rear panel LAN connector on the switcher can be connected to an Ethernet
LAN or WAN, making makes SIS control of the switcher possible. Communication
between the switcher and the controlling device is via Telnet (a TCP socket using
port 23). The Telnet port can be changed, if necessary, via SIS. The SIS commands
and behavior of the product are identical to the commands and behavior the
product exhibits when you are communicating with it via a serial port.
Ethernet connection
The Ethernet cable can be terminated as a straight-through cable or a crossover
cable and must be properly terminated for your application (figure 4-3).
•
Crossover cable — Direct connection between the computer and the
MPX switcher
•
Patch (straight) cable — Connection of the MPX switcher to an Ethernet LAN
A cable that is wired as T568A at one end
and T568B at the other (Tx and Rx pairs
reversed) is a "crossover" cable.
A cable wired the same at both ends is
called a "straight-through" cable, because
no pin/pair assignments are swapped.

Default IP parameters
To access the switcher via the Ethernet port, you need the Extron IP address and
may need the subnet mask and the gateway address. If the IP address has been
changed to an address comprised of words and characters, you can determine the
actual numeric IP address using the ping (ICMP) utility (see appendix A, “Ethernet
Connection”, for more details). If the addresses have not been changed, the factory-
specified defaults are:
• IPaddress 192.168.254.254
• Gatewayaddress 0.0.0.0
• Subnetmask 255.255.0.0
• DHCP off
