5.5.3 The Administrator Password
When prompted, set the administrator user ID and password. Do not forget this
password as there is no way of resetting the password if it is lost or forgotten.
We recommend that you put a password administration policy in place where
authorized personnel have access to the password, and any changes are
documented.
Tip
If your system is partitioned in such a fashion as to keep the operating
system and the data separate and you lose the administrative password, you
could destroy the partition where the operating system is installed. Re-install
Windows NT and take ownership of all the files on the data partition.
This will give you access to the files but you will lose any security settings of
your system in the process. Depending on the way your system was
configured, you could lose all your data, so the method described should be
used as a last resort.
5.5.4 The Emergency Repair Disk
You will be prompted to create an
emergency repair disk
. (ERD) at this point. We
strongly recommend that you create the ERD in order to be able to repair a
damaged Windows NT installation.
If you elect to create the ERD, you will be prompted to insert the diskette
towards the end of the installation process.
Note: This is an important step and should not be skipped, because the ERD
can be a life saver if it is available and is properly updated.
If you make any changes or additions to the system at a later date, use the
RDISK.EXE utility found in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory to update the ERD.
Note: Each Windows NT installation creates a unique ERD and these are not
transferable between different Windows NT servers.
5.5.5 Selecting General Components
A panel will appear where you will select or deselect NT 4.0 components.
Components are grouped under the following headings:

Accessibility Options
•
Accessories
•
Communications
•
Games
•
Multimedia
•
Electronic Mail and Messaging Utilities
You are able to add any of these now, or selectively add or remove any of them
once the installation is complete.
