Chapter 5. Installing Windows NT Server 4.0
This chapter describes the installation of Windows NT Server 4.0 using the
commercially available version of the software. The installation process will be
specified in general terms that relate to all IBM PC server models. Any
information relating to specific models of the server range are noted.
5.1 IBM Servers Used
We tested this installation process with the full range of currently available IBM
PC servers with various combinations of the following devices:
•
SCSI adapters
− Integrated SCSI-2 Ultra F/W controller
− IBM PCI SCSI-2 F/W RAID adapter
− IBM ServeRAID adapter
− IBM Streaming RAID adapter/A
•
SCSI drives
− 3 x 2.25 GB drives in a non-RAID setup
− 3 x 2.25 GB drives configured as one RAID-5 array
•
NIC adapters
− Integrated AMD Ethernet controller
− PCI Auto LANStreamer
5.2 Pre-installation Checklist
You should ensure you have done the following before you start:
•
Prepared your RAID array and initialized all logical drives created using the
RAID administration utility provided with the server.
•
Partitioned your logical drives. We recommend certain configuration
parameters, as discussed in 3.6, “Disk Partitioning” on page 65.
•
Checked that you have all the necessary device driver diskettes ready or can
access them from another computer if required.
•
Checked that you have the Install from CD-ROM installation diskettes and not
the Install from Network installation diskettes. To build the correct diskettes
from the Windows NT CD-ROM, run the command
WINNT /OX from DOS, or
WINNT32 /OX from an existing Windows NT machine.
Note: Read Chapter 3, “Pre-installation Considerations” on page 61 for some
helpful hints.
5.3 Installing NT 4.0
The installation process is divided into two components:
1. Hardware setup
2. Software/network setup
The first component is text-based and asks you to make selections, such as
hardware, disk controller, Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), and any
