416 IBM System Storage DS6000 Series: Copy Services with IBM System z
28.1 DS6000 and DS8000 Copy Services interoperability
Copy Services operations are supported between the DS6000 and the DS8000. This means
you can have a mixed Copy Services environment that contains both devices.
28.2 Preparing the environment
Before starting Copy Services operations in a mixed DS6000 and DS8000 environment, you
must ensure that this environment is set up correctly.
28.2.1 Minimum microcode levels
To manage Copy Services in a mixed environment, you need to have licensed internal code
bundle 6.0.600.9 or later on your DS6000. You also need your IBM Service Representative to
install code bundle 6.0.500.52 or later on your DS8000.
28.2.2 Hardware and licensing requirements
To establish Remote Mirror and Copy pairs (also known as PPRC pairs) between a DS6000
and a DS8000, the DS6000 and the DS8000 must both have the appropriate Remote Mirror
and Copy (RMC) licenses.
The DS6000 and DS8000 must also have Fibre Channel adapters that have connectivity to
each other, either directly or via Fibre Channel switches. ESCON adapters cannot be used to
mirror a DS6000 with a DS8000.
z/OS Global Mirror RMZ (formerly XRC)
The DS6000 cannot be used as a z/OS Global Mirror primary Storage Unit. There is
consequently no feature code for z/OS Global Mirror (RMZ) for DS6000. The DS6000 can be
used as a secondary Storage Unit.
28.2.3 Network connectivity
Network connectivity requirements depend on how you want to manage the environment. If
you plan to use System z interfaces like TSO or ICKDSF, there are no network connectivity
requirements. The commands are sent inband through FICON or ESCON. If, however, you
plan to use the DS CLI or the DS GUI, your requirements are as follows:
For FlashCopy management:
If you want to use the DS8000 DS GUI to manage FlashCopy on the DS6000, then you
need network connectivity between the DS8000 HMCs and the DS6000 SMCs.
If you want to use the DS6000 DS GUI to manage FlashCopy on the DS8000, then you
need network connectivity between the DS8000 HMCs and the DS6000 SMCs.
If you want to use the DS CLI to manage FlashCopy on either the DS6000 or the
DS8000 then the DS8000 HMCs and the DS6000 SMCs do not need to be connected
by a network. However, the server on which the DS CLI is installed must have network
connectivity to both the SMC and the HMC.
If you have PPRC links between the DS6000 and DS8000, you can also use remote
FlashCopy to establish FlashCopies of the Remote Mirror target volumes.
For creating Remote Mirror and Copy (RMC), also known as Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy
(PPRC) paths and pairs:
