434 IBM System Storage DS6000 Series: Copy Services with IBM System z
29.1 DS6000 and ESS 800 Copy Services interoperability
Copy Services operations are supported between the DS6000 and the ESS 800 and Model
750. For the rest of this chapter, all references to the ESS 800 also apply to the ESS 750. On
the ESS 800, RMC is called PPRC. All references to PPRC are interchangeable with RMC.
29.2 Preparing the environment
Before starting Copy Services operations in a mixed DS6000 and ESS 800 environment, you
must ensure that this environment is set up correctly.
29.2.1 Minimum microcode levels
To manage the ESS 800 Copy Services from the DS6000, you must have your IBM Service
Representative install licensed internal code Version 2.4.3.65 or higher on the ESS 800, and
DS6000 code bundle 6.0.600.9 or higher on the DS6000.
29.2.2 Hardware and licensing requirements
To establish PPRC pairs between an ESS 800 and a DS6000, the ESS 800 must have a
PPRC license and the DS6000 must have an RMC license.
The ESS 800 must also have Fibre Channel adapters that can connect to the DS6000.
ESCON adapters cannot be used to mirror an ESS 800 to a DS6000. You cannot have a
Copy Services relationship between a 2105 E20 or F20 and a DS6000. You could, however,
have a cascaded installation where an ESS F20 is mirrored to an ESS 800 that is then
mirrored to a DS6000. The ESS F20 to ESS 800 relationship must, however, be managed
with ESS management tools such as the ESS CLI or the ESS Web Copy Services GUI.
z/OS Global Mirror RMZ (formerly XRC)
The DS6000 cannot be used as a Global Mirror primary Storage Unit. There is consequently
no feature code for z/OS Global Mirror (RMZ) for DS6000. The DS6000 can be used a
secondary Storage Unit.
29.2.3 Network connectivity
Network connectivity requirements depend on how you want to manage the environment. If
you plan to use System z interfaces like TSO or ICKDSF, there are no network connectivity
requirements. The commands are sent inband by FICON. If, however, you plan to use the DS
CLI or the DS GUI, your requirements are as follows:
For FlashCopy management:
If you want to use the DS6000 DS GUI to manage FlashCopy on the ESS 800, then
you need network connectivity between the DS6000 SMCs and the ESS 800 Copy
Services servers.
If you want to be able to use the DS CLI to manage FlashCopy on the ESS 800, then
you need network connectivity between the machine on which you are running the DS
CLI and at least one of the ESS 800 Copy Services servers.
For creating RMC/PPRC paths and pairs:
If you wish to use the ESS 800 as a PPRC source machine, then you need network
connectivity to the ESS 800 Copy Services servers, either from a server running DS
CLI or from the DS6000 SMC.
