Preface
This preface describes the objectives, audience, and organization of the Cisco MGX 8950 Hardware
Installation Guide. It also defines the conventions that are used to present instructions and information
throughout the guide.
Objectives
The Cisco MGX 8950 Hardware Installation Guide describes how to install the Cisco MGX 8950 switch
and its related components. After completing the installation procedures covered in this guide, refer to
the appropriate related documents to configure your Cisco MGX 8950 system. For a list of related
documents, see the
“Related Documentation” section on page 19.
Audience
The Cisco MGX 8950 Hardware Installation Guide is intended for use by installers, operators, network
designers, and managers who are responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining the Cisco
MGX 8950. A familiarity with network systems is recommended.
Organization
The Cisco MGX 8950 Hardware Installation Guide includes the following chapters and appendixes:
Chapter 1, “Product Overview,” provides an overview of the Cisco MGX 8950 switch and its related
components.
Chapter 2, “Preparing for Installation,” provides the procedures to complete and the considerations
to keep in mind prior to installing a Cisco MGX 8950 and its related components.
Chapter 3, “Installing a Cisco MGX 8950,” provides the procedures for installing a Cisco MGX
8950 as a stand-alone unit or in a rack. It also provides procedures for removing and installing
related components.
Chapter 4, “Maintaining the Cisco MGX 8950 Switch,” provides maintenance procedures for the
Cisco MGX 8950 switch.
Appendix A, “Technical Specifications,” provides the technical specifications relevant to the Cisco
MGX 8950, its processor and service modules, and the applications and services that it provides.
Appendix B, “Cabling Summary,” provides specifications for Cisco MGX 8950 cabling.
