Basic operation
The HP Color LaserJet 3500/3550 and 3700 series printer functions are divided into four
systems:
1. Engine control system
2. Laser/scanner system
3. Image formation system
4. Pickup/feed system
Upon receipt of printing commands from the external device via the formatter, the engine
control system provides control for the laser/scanner system, the image formation system,
and the pickup/feed system and performs print operations. The engine control system
receives status from each system and sends the necessary information back to the formatter.

NOTE
The terms fixing and fuser refer to the same operation (or assembly) and are used
interchangeably in this document. Also, ITB unit and transfer unit refer to the same assembly
and are used interchangeably throughout this document.
Operation sequence
A microcomputer in the engine control system controls the operation sequence for the
printer.
Table 5-1. Basic operation sequence describes the main operational periods from
the point when the printer is turned on until a print operation is completed and each motor
stops rotating.
