Access Navigator - Release 1.8 August 2003 15-3
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
Alarm Reporting
l
MINOR alarms affect service to 2 to 23 subscribers, or reduce service reliability. A minor alarm
will occur if a redundant element fails, such as a Controller card, power supply, or GR-303 control
channel.
l WARNING alarms (GR-303 only) indicate a service state change.
l ALERT alarms are non-service affecting, but indicate a quality problem. Alerts will occur when
monitored traffic events exceed user-set thresholds.
Alarm Reporting
Access Navigator reports alarms in several ways:
l Alarm Indicators. LED indicators on the front panel (see Figure 15-2) show critical, major, and
minor alarms, as well as system, power, and DS1 status.
l Alarm Relay Outputs. The Access Navigator has alarm relays that are activated by critical,
major, and minor alarms. These three relays provide dry contact closures for connection to the
office facility’s alarm system.
l Alarm Inputs. External contact closures can be reported.
l CLI Alarm Messages. The control interface provides alarm messages and log status reports to
aid the operator in locating problems and monitoring events.
l EOC Alarm Messages. Access Navigators with the GR-303 option provide alarm message
reporting to the switch over the Embedded Operations Channel (EOC) in the GR-303 interface
group DS1s.
l SNMP Trap Reports. Traps are generated when certain events occur (see SNMP Trap Reports
on page C-9).The Access Navigator can send these reports to up to three Network Management
System (NMS) IP addresses.
Alarm Testing
Access Navigator alarm functions can be manually tested using the following command for setting
critical, major, and minor alarms. Turning alarms on or off will produce alarm messages and log entries
stating that the alarm event was manually set or cleared by the user. Manually set alarms are not reported
over the GR-303 EOC link to the switch.
Syntax: set alarms <critical|major|minor> <on|off>
