17-2 August 2003 Access Navigator - Release 1.8
Update Controller Card Software
Overview
Overview
This procedure provides steps for updating the operating system software in each Controller card’s flash
memory. Upgrading software does not affect provisioning and other configuration settings unless the
update alters the function of the system, such as adding GR-303 functions to a DCS system.
The Access Navigator can hold two (redundant) Controller cards for time-slot interchange. In a
protected redundant system, the software in the standby Controller can be updated locally or remotely
by a Telnet or RS-232 management session without disrupting service. The other card can then be
updated by using a CLI command to switch the standby Controller to active, allowing the second
Controller (now in standby) to be updated.
Updating an Access Navigator with an unprotected (non-redundant) Controller will disrupt service. If
a service interruption is not acceptable, it is recommended that the Controller card be physically
replaced by a Controller card with updated software, as described in Replace Controller Card on
page 16-3.
Updates use either Trivial File Transfer Format (TFTP) over an Ethernet IP connection or a terminal
emulation program such as Hyper Terminal using Xmodem file transfer protocol. TFTP is much faster
than Xmodem.
NOTE: TFTP is strongly recommended for updating software because you can also use
TFTP to upload a copy of the Access Navigator configuration settings to protect against
accidental loss.
