ACSLS (StorageTek specific term)
The Automated Cartridge System
Library Server (ACSLS) software that
manages the Automated Cartridge
System (ACS).
Active Directory (Windows specific
term)
The directory service in a Windows
network. It contains information about
resources on the network and makes
them accessible to users and
applications. The directory services
provide a consistent way to name,
describe, locate, access and manage
resources regardless of the physical
system they reside on.
AML (EMASS/GRAU specific term)
Automated Mixed-Media library.
application agent
A component needed on a client to back
up or restore online database
integrations.

application system (ZDB specific term)
A system the application or database
runs on. The application or database
data is located on original units.

archived redo log (Oracle specific
term)
Also called offline redo log. If the
Oracle8/9 database operates in the
ARCHIVELOG mode, as each online
redo log is filled, it is copied to one (or
more) archived log destination(s). This
copy is the Archived Redo Log. The
presence or absence of an Archived
Redo Log is determined by the mode
that the database is using:
• ARCHIVELOG - The filled online
redo log files are archived before
they are reused. The database can be
recovered from an instance and disk
failure. The “hot” backup can be
performed only when the database is
running in this mode.
• NOARCHIVELOG - The filled
online redo log files are not
archived.
